What Is Propolis?

Propolis is a natural, resin like substance produced honey bees. Bees collect resins from tree buds, bark, and other plant materials, then combine them with beeswax and their own natural enzymes. Because of its sticky consistency, propolis is sometimes called “bee glue.”

Inside the hive, bees use propolis to seal small cracks, smooth rough surfaces, reinforce the structure, and protect the colony from outside contaminants. They may also apply a thin layer of propolis to certain areas of the hive, helping maintain a clean and healthy environment for developing brood.

What Is Propolis Made Of?

The exact composition of propolis varies depending on the plants, trees, climate, season, and geographic area where it is collected. Its color can range from golden brown and reddish brown to greenish brown or nearly black.

Although every batch is naturally different, propolis generally contains:

• Plant resins and balsams
• Beeswax
• Aromatic and essential oils
• Pollen and other natural plant compounds
• Flavonoids and phenolic compounds

Researchers have identified compounds such as caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, chrysin, galangin, pinocembrin, and vanillin in different varieties of propolis.

The Natural Properties of Propolis

Propolis has been valued for generations and continues to be studied for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. These natural qualities help explain why honey bees use it as part of the hive’s protective system.

Today, propolis is commonly found in products such as:

• Throat sprays and lozenges
• Skin balms and salves
• Soaps and personal care products
• Dietary supplements

Research into propolis is ongoing, and its composition and effects may differ depending on its botanical source and how it is prepared.

Propolis for Skin Care

Because of its naturally occurring plant compounds, propolis is frequently included in skin care products intended to soothe and protect the skin. Some research has explored its potential role in supporting the healing of minor skin irritation and superficial wounds. However, propolis should not replace professional treatment for serious wounds, infections, or burns.
